This tree is native to western Asia and Asia Minor. It was first introduced to the USA in 1854- commercial production began in the late 1970’s and rapidly expanded to a major operation in the San Joaquin Valley CA. Iran and Turkey are other major producers & to a lesser extent, Greece, India, Syria, Pakistan and elsewhere. The meat is used in dinner recipes, ice creams baked goods and nut mixes. It is a very versatile nut and is enjoyed as a snack in its own right.
